Liberal Democrats Spring Conference 2010

12.02.00am GMT Wed 4th Nov 2009

The Liberal Democrats spring conference will be taking place in Birmingham from 12th March to 14th March 2010 at The International Convention Centre (The ICC).

http://libdemsinbirmingham2010.com/ is a website with information about The ICC, links to booking accommodation, information on what to do in Birmingham, maps of Birmingham and information about how to get to Birmingham and how to get about in Birmingham.

A few tips I would share with those coming from outside are that when booking accommodation you should consider the Malmaison and the Radisson SAS Hotel I have stayed at both the hotels in Birmingham and would say that if you can afford them they are well worth it. I haven't stayed at the Express by Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn, Jurys Inn or Novotel in Birmingham City Centre but I have stayed in these hotels elsewhere I would recommend these other then the Jurys Inn however the City Inn, Copthorne Hotel Birmingham, Crowne Plaza Birmingham, Holiday Inn Birmingham City, Hyatt Regency Birmingham, Jurys Inn Birmingham, Malmaison, Novotel Birmingham Centre, Radisson SAS Hotel, Ramada Birmingham City Centre and Ramada Encore Birmingham City Centre are all with no more then 15 to 20 minutes walk from The ICC. The Copthorne Hotel Birmingham, Hyatt Regency Birmingham, Jurys Inn Birmingham and Novotel Birmingham Centre are probably the closest. The http://libdemsinbirmingham2010.com/ website fails to mention the Premier Inn Birmingham Broad Street (Brindley Place), Premier Inn Birmingham Broad Street (Canal Side) and Travelodge Birmingham Central which are all very close to The ICC.

If while in Birmingham you are looking for a break from the conference and wish to see more in Birmingham you may wish to visit the Botanical Gardens, Cadbury World, Ikon Gallery, IMAX, National SEA LIFE Centre or Thinktank.

If you wish to do some shopping while in Birmingham you may wish to visit The Bullring or The Mailbox both of which are within walking distance of The ICC.

The ICC is in a great location when it comes to eating because a number of different restaurants are not too far from The ICC. In the area around The ICC I have been to Cafe Ikon, Festival Balti Restaurant, Handmade Burger Company and Las Iguanas. The Bullring and Birmingham city centre have all the major chains that you find everywhere. If you wish to travel a little further out of the city centre you may to take a taxi or a bus to Sparkbrook, Balsall Heath and Moseley the area known as the Balti Triangle. If you are visiting the Balti Triangle I would recommend that you try Al Faisals, Desi Grill Khana, Desi Khana Perdesi, Heavenly Desserts (obviously for desserts only) or Lazeez Lounge. For more information about the Balti Triangle visit http://www.baltitriangle.com A number of restaurants in the Balti Triangle area do not sell alcohol and some don't allow alcohol consumption on their property.

Getting around in Birmingham is not difficult, we have a great buses network. Network West Midlands has the online timetables and fare information you need with easy ticket buying and route planning. Alternatively call 0871 200 22 33 for timetable information (Calls from landlines cast 10p per minute) or visit Centro's many information points. In Birmingham you will need to give the exact fare to the driver as you board, buses in Birmingham do not give change. Taxis are an easy way of getting around Birmingham, there are taxi ranks in the city centre; including at New Street Station and Digbeth Coach Station as well as on Broad Street not far from The ICC. If you wish to use a private hire car you should always pre-book and get an estimate of the fare.
